  He began playing tennis with his father in the back garden of our house in London when he was three years old. Tennis became a key part of his life. Arthur moved to Barcelona, Spain, and the Luis Bruguera Tennis Academy with intensive training, on-court tennis drills, and matches with world-ranked pros. He has competed in Slovenia, Croatia, and Serbia on the European Satellite Tour. His performances earned him a scholarship to Lander University in South Carolina playing in the NCAA Division II Championships, reaching the national semi-finals. After a semester in the USA, Arthur returned to university in Oxford, England, and founded and captained Oxford Brookes University tennis to promotion up the British National University League for three consecutive years. He entered the Middlesex (London) U21 Tennis Championship and won the event for two consecutive years and represented Middlesex in the British County Cup.

  On leaving university Virgin Active, London was his next stop as a head tennis coach at their flagship sports center in the UK. At this center, he met Sam Branson who offered him a job on ‘his father’s island’. As the saying goes, it was an offer that was hard to refuse.

  Hicks arrived in the BVI in 2008 for a one-year contract and, apart from holidays, hasn’t been back since. Arthur has developed an innate love for the Caribbean, for the BVI, and for Virgin Gorda in particular. Who says that Virgin Gorda can’t have someone who can hit the ball ‘naturally properly’ and become a Wimbledon champion? Gain scholarships to Universities?
